The Theatre of Automation

The project imagines a post-labour future where automation has replaced work, allowing humans to focus on play, creativity, and social interaction. Set in Hammerfest, Norway, the traditional city dissolves as production becomes decentralized and people gather around new cultural and recreational infrastructures.
At the center is the Theatre of Automation, a dynamic structure that challenges the distinction between actor and spectator. Rather than simply observing, people actively participate in shaping both the performance and the territory itself. Positioned between land and sea, the theatre responds to tides, technology, and environmental change, becoming a symbol of the evolving relationship between humans, machines, and nature. Eventually, when rising sea levels make its presence impossible, the theatre departs, carrying with it the memory and ideals of this new society.
